Some housecleaning and preventative maintenance tasks only need to be done once or twice a year. The problem is, we forget to do them once or twice a year.

To make it easier to stay on track, break down annual and seasonal tasks, and attack them with a monthly cleaning schedule. Nothing gets too backed up; and essential house cleaning eventually gets done.

Here is the April house cleaning checklist that works best for me.

1. Hearth Patrol

Clean the fireplace. Empty ashes. Clean gas jets in the hearth. They've had a busy winter, after all.

2. Good as New

Oil and clean fireplace accessories, so they look as good as new.

3. Daylight Savings Time Means...

Check smoke alarm batteries. Change if needed.

4. Take a Walk on the Outside

Check the exterior for any areas needing repair or paint, and put the tasks on this or next month's to-do list.

5. Goodbye, Winter

Take down storm doors and windows.

6. First Screening

Inspect, repair and vacuum window screens. Get them clean and ready for the open-window days ahead!

7. Hello, Spring!

Clean your windows and let the sun shine in.

8. Blind Spot

Clean your window blinds or bring in the pros to do the dirty job for you.

9. Home Beauty Treatment

Clean curtains and other window treatments. Wash what you can, dry clean what you can, call professionals for the rest.

10. Final April House Cleaning Task: Furniture and Upholstery Cleaning

Clean your furniture and uphostery. Now, your April house cleaning checklist is complete. Happy Spring!
